History
Like virtually every club in the area, Hopewell Valley waived the annual dues of all members in the armed forces. These payments in 1943 were $56.75 for a family member, $43.25 for a single man, $27 for a single woman. Despite the club’s very moderate charges, membership declined sharply, with resignations outnumbering applications by 4 to 1. Even a board decision to offer any new member five and a half hours of free lessons from the professional (the club would reimburse him) didn’t help matters.
Dwindling revenues made it impossible to maintain the course, so one nine was taken out of play in 1943, and on the other it was the members themselves who mowed the fairways and greens. In the fall of the year, the members could have been forgiven for gazing heavenward and crying, "Why us. Lord?" Because it was then that the Salvage Committee for War Purposes descended upon Hopewell Valley and carted away the steel bridge that spanned Stoney Brook: it was urgently needed in the production of war material.
